Nadah, Nadah, Nadah… <Insert long conversation here>

Google made big changes last year and we all know that it will keep on coming. Many link builders were shaken by the Penguin, Panda and EMD updates because of one simple reason— believing that they can control Google search results and make their client look like Brad Pitt with Jesus abs on top of every keywords that they want. And then they suddenly woke up, as Google slapped them square in the face.

Guest Blogging Is the New Article Submission

Yes, there are blogs that accept guest blogs ala article directory submission style. Just register for an account and post your guest blogs. Just follow the rules for posting content, submit it for “review”, and it will be a live piece of crap. <Ring a bell> anything that is not moderated is low quality stuff. Let’s face it! Link builders want links, that’s why they appreciate sites like this. As long as there are sites who accept content because they are lazy and can’t write, the crappy coco will always be there.

Google can see you. The wrath is near on these low quality guest blog sites. You don’t want your hard-earned link on low quality sites, neither your content nor your client site. If your process is the same as ours—focused on producing high quality guest blogging work—then you will make it through the pangs of Google.

Guest Blogging: 500 to 700 words Content Should Do the Trick

How can someone measure the length of content when they need to write awesome stuff for people’s use? There’s no specific length of content in guest blogs; though there are blogs who would require you to have X to X number of words only. There are blogs who would appreciate concise, useful stuffs, rather than lengthy and nonsense crap..

“Great content can’t be scaled. Sure, mediocre content can, but it’s virtually worthless,” as Link Building Superstar Jon Cooper mentioned on his blog post, “Content Scalability”.

Don’t you ever get tired of producing just a plain, run-of-the-mill content, when you can write high quality stuffs? Here are some helpful ideas to generate that first-rate content:

31 types of content for every day of the month by Amanda Gallucci on iAcquire

6 Tips to Help Your Branded Content Use the News by Mark Sherbin on ContentMarketingInstitute

Content Strategy Generator on Spreadsheet via SEO Gadget

Linkbait is Not a Content Strategy by John Doherty

Submit It, Then Move On

The problem here is that link builders make guest blogging their only strategy. Guest blogging is just a tactic; if you can’t hear me then get lost! Guest blogging works well when you know what other tactics to include on it. We all strategize and determine which stuff should work well for our campaign.

Here are other tactics that you can combine to Guest Blogging:

1. A blog comment works well before and after your guest blog gets published.
2. Infographics work well in guest blogging.
3. Internal linking always works well for guest blogs. Linking to contents that the blog already has and relevant to your contribution is good—and increases the chances of getting your post approved, too.
4. Linking to your post from other guest blog posts that you have can add good value.
5. Trade guest blogs, you can always do this thing if you have your own blog.
6. Don’t just guest blog, take advantage of the relationship that you were able to open with the blog owner and the readers. Turn them into links.
7. Look for broken links.
8. If his or her logo needs rework, consider offering some help.
9. Do quick SEO audit for free, you definitely know your stuff. There are sites out there that can help you do a quick free SEO audit. First is your SEO instinct, next is www.seositecheckup.com.
10. If he or she doesn’t have an authorship markup configured, offer help— you might get that link.

Guest Blogging is Dead— You Killed It

There are people who believe that Guest Blogging will soon be dead because of the upsurge of low quality content published by low quality blogs. Like what I said above, it has become the new article directory arena. Just like low quality infographics that present nothing but ‘dumb and common information’ and ‘short statistical proof’ that has been noted by Matt Cutts. Low quality guest blogs present nothing but recycled, rehashed, and rewritten content from other people’s work. What do you expect?

It’s easy to see:

1. Stubborn blog owners can’t afford time to write; bloggers will be the first victim of Google’s swing on low quality content. They accept guest blogs and let other people create an account on their site and then their site becomes a farm of low quality content and outbound links.

2. Paid guest blogging is an obvious kill. For blogs who publicly post WE ACCEPT GUEST BLOGS FOR DOLLARS. Or you need to pay $$$ for quick review of your posts is an easy target and can be considered as paid linking scheme.

3. Low quality content is an obvious kill. The same content from other websites, salvaged and repeated anchor texts inside the author byline could get you in trouble.

In Summary

Guest blogging will never be dead. It’s a form of content marketing and content will always be the most important part of the internet. There are just SEO and link builders who are giving guest blogging a bad name. If you are one of them, be warned! For bloggers, get real – you know when a content is useful for your readers. It’s easy to detect if someone just want links from your site. Content marketing is all about adding value through the use of content. Don’t be an ass because you know you can.

Increasing your efficiency to any SEO or link building work is important.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done an interview on SEOteky. Not that I was running out of friends in the industry <grin> but because I was too damn busy working for my clients and the team.

Before we go on to this interview, I want to relay a shout out to Alessio Madeyski, the person behind meet your SEO series. After reading his post about Why I stopped meet your SEO, I asked myself if there are people who find this interview type content annoying and thinking that I am just using other people’s name to build my own in the industry.

I only want to interview people and learn new stuffs, this is a personal thing for me. If you don’t care, please don’t waste your time reading this.

So let’s meet our special guest today, Gisele Navarro Mendez – Social Community Manager for Upstream and SEO consultant for SEOmyranking.

1. Please Introduce yourself Gisele – When did you started on the industry?

Let me start by saying that I wouldn’t consider myself an expert just yet, I’ve been working on search since 2009, so I’m quite a young SEO. I started as an SEO executive for a Spanish agency, then I moved up to a strategist position and some time after that I became the SEO manager for an Argentinian PR agency. At some point I decided it was time to offer SEO services myself and it was then when I created SEOmyranking, and started helping websites being found.

Nowadays I’m more focused on education: I train link builders in the art of site discovery, relationship building and outreach, among other things; and I coach small business owners and bloggers who want to learn about SEO and social media.

2. The demand for social presence is growing and growing, from Facebook to Pinterest. How do you see this growth can change the internet marketing industry?

We’re finally getting to a point in which we’ve understood that we need to combine different areas both for the sake of the users and their experiences, as well as for the growth of our business. When it comes to social media, we’re talking about a factor that search engines are using to prove authority, but also a way for people to be connected to what matters to them (friends, family, causes, brands, organizations, etc.)

Over the last couple of years, websites and businesses from around the world have realized they needed to pay attention to their social media profiles, but in most cases they did it after reading those articles mentioning the almighty “social signals”. Hopefully by 2013 all of them will have found their unique reasons to be on social media, because that’s the only way they will come up with a strategy that makes sense.

3. Content is the most important part of both social and SEO. How do you win people and make content a success for your campaign?

I think in terms of producing content that will help grow a business by offering information that matters to the audience. Basically, I always try to follow Ian Lurie’s tips from his 2012 Mozcon Presentation because he’s right when he says that instead of “content marketing”, we should be talking about producing marketable content.

Regarding winning people, I’d say my approach has been inspired by Garrett French’s concept of “preciprocation”, even before reading his book! I’ve always hated the idea of harassing someone into letting me place a piece of content with a link somewhere, and connecting through a natural path sounds like the best plan. I don’t have a formula because every industry has its differences, but I recommend link builders to:

Be honest.

Truly care about the target site as much as they care about the client’s site.

Take the time to get to know the readers and the writer.

Be clear about what is it that they are asking for.

4. What’s your take on people faking likes, tweets and even re-pins? How about for businesses relying on these fake stuffs?

Faking social shares is the new faking social bookmarks. The latter one didn’t take anyone anywhere, so I think buying Facebook Likes or tweets will bring the same “one hit wonder” kind of results.

5. I got a confession to make; I was once a big follower of creating tons of Social Media accounts and DIY-ing Social Bookmarks and shares. I run it through TOR Browser to change IP’s. How can SEO’s get out of these retarded stuffs?

Many SEOs got out after the latest changes in the industry, powered by Google updates and unnatural link notifications. Honestly, I think that those tactics are being used by those who don’t want to hire an SEO and would rather buy 150 bookmarks for $59 because they believe these people when they say:

It will take for them to get hit by a change in the algorithm, or for their customers to decide their site isn’t good enough. I’m guessing that if they are relying on these services, they must be paying little to none attention to their web design, user experience and behavior of their visitors…. And who wants to engage with such a company anyway?

6. There’s an impending issue about relationship building and link building, what is your take about these two going head to head?

Have you read “Relationship Building ≠ Link Building” by Chris Dyson? He wrote about how relationship building can’t scale and that you can waste a lot of time trying to build a connection with an influencer just to end up empty-handed. I think that’s the case here, we keep writing about how building relationships is the way to go and now hundreds of SEOs are trying really hard to connect to their inner PR because they believe link building is dead. But the truth is that in the end, we’re doing it for the links, even though every now and then you can develop a new business opportunity based solely on a link prospect. Do we need to incorporate the human factor into our link building? Yes, we do. Is relationship building the new link building? No, it’s not.

7. Is social media killing SEO? Considering that Google+ can affect personalized SERPS results. Social signals are indeed playing its part on ranking websites.

We could have a long talk about personalized search and how that’s affecting our job as SEOs, but I wouldn’t say social media has anything to do with that.

The web is a big city and it will always need its roads and its streets to connect the different regions, as well as its traffic signs and billboards to lead the way. Links could be the roads and streets, the on-page optimization would work as traffic signs and the billboards could be a mix between display, Knowledge Graph and social. But that’s how I see it, many SEOs seem to believe that the apocalypses is near.

8. Share a trade secret that you find successful in your SEO and Social Media campaign. Might be often neglected by people and yet you find it very effective on your end.

Uhm… Common sense?

9. My favorite part on the interview: Looking forward 5 years from now, how do you see Social Media and SEO?

I’ve always hated those “looking forward 5 years from now” questions, 5 years is a very long time! I would say that:

Working on integrated online marketing strategies won’t be such a rare practice,

The days of anchor texts will be long forgotten,

There might be more Internet regulations in place and that could change the way in which we do business now,

The world will be separated into authors and publishers,

Hopefully companies will take social customer care seriously.

Guest blogging indeed became one of the turnkeys of link building. All you need to do is to master guest blogging fundamentals and you can get on the roll building high-quality and authoritative links. Indeed, it is effective at building editorial citation links and it can help promote your website in your relevant niche.

A lot of SEOs and link builders are jumping into the guest blogging bandwagon. Some people ask me;how do I make a difference? How long is the life of a guest blog? Is guest blogging going to get fucked by Google, just like any link building method that we all used in order to rank?

It’s either you become one of them (The SEO Walkers) or step it up a notch and follow these important quality indicators that can increase your guest blogging success.

Relevancy Is Key

We all know that relevance is important in link building; some agencies call it “thematic links” and Google always looks into that in order to weigh how much value a particular link is giving your website. Discovering all the topics that you can cover is important. The wider the better!

On guest blogging, you would always want to expand your reach. You would always want to look on your vertical but you should keep in mind not to miss those horizontal opportunities. In the image above, you can see the black circles as the main keyword “Fashion Tips” surrounded by gray circles that help us expand the ideas for the root phrase “Fashion” – Top list, seasonal, age demographic, guides and how to’s. Furthermore, we expanded fashion since it can also be relevant to horizontal niches like parents, money making and apps.

Bonus: Google Suggest can help!

Look for Social Indicators

If there is something that we guest bloggers should look into our guest blog targets, it has to be Social Indicators and not “LINK JUICE”.You heard me.

A blog wouldn’t be successful if it doesn’t implement social media on his website. Social media is really reshaping peer-to-peer recommendation and became one major factor in determining real quality weblogs. Aside from having a Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterestaccount, we must learn how to assess that the target blog is active on the social space.

Foller.me – Checks the topics, hashtags and mentions of a particular Twitter account

Many blogs implement social media share buttons and thatis always the first sign of being sociable; it simply shows that the blogger wants his posts to be shared by other people in the social space. Social media activities feeds can also be implemented on blogs and posts —recent tweets and Facebook streams, you might also want to consider looking at those stuffs also.

Now if a blog is proven to be sociable, you know that your post wouldn’t be just a stock pile together with rotten tomatoes. Your post will be able to reach the target readers, including your customers, that can become your advocates or subscribers.

Shout out to Gisele Mendez for curating a list of tips and tricks to use twitter efficiently.

Check the Layout

Google went crazy in making sure that websites who cater heavy ads and affiliate links will be pushed down on the search engine result pages (SERPS). So how do you make sure that you don’t throw your well-made content to junkies?

Heavy ads on the first fold is an indicator of a poor quality website. If you throw your posts in blogs like this, you are just wasting your time. We don’t write great content only to throw on websites like these.

The last thing that you ever need is to mess everything up adding your content to a poor quality website. You should know the risks involve in guest blogging before jumping into it.

MORE NOTES:

Google Updates Above The Fold Page Layout Algorithm

Use Industry Metrics to Gauge Your Target

If you are looking for quality targets then you must know how to gauge them by using some of the best and simple industry metrics available out there. From Google Page Rank(PR), Domain Authority (DA), Page Authority (PA), to Ahrefs Rank to AC Rank. You should always gauge your prospects before doing outreach to them.

We already have a list of prospects but you want to validate it, Add SEOQuake on your browser

How to use it: Left-click the SEOQuake icon on your Chrome and choose Check/Compare URLs and domains…

A box will pop out where you can put all the urls that you want to check – Hit OK

The result will be shown on a new tab. Hit REQUEST ALL. You can also download the information to CSV if you wanted to.

This is a simple way to grab important stats like Domain Age, Page Rank and number of indexes. Jason A created an extensive guide on SEO Quake for link prospecting, you might want to check it also. The above instructions requires you to have a list of target domains though. Since I hate SEOQuake, it eats up my internet and trigger Google spam captcha.

Will Guest Posting Be Dead Just Like Old Link Building Before?

The answer is a NO – YES.

No, because I perceive that guest blogging is a method that adds value not only to search engines but to the readers of the blog. High quality guest blogging won’t be dead since it focuses on providing great content in front of other people’s audience.

Yes, guest blogging will be dead; but that is for people who don’t know what they are doing—people who only talk about link juice and keywords. For people who submit junks and content that can’t be used by real humans. For people who doesn’t nurture blogger relationships from guest blogs.

Understand the true value of guest blogging – Everything will be A-OK!

Ubbersuggest now demands for captcha solving on every queue request. This project might no longer work like it was. I am working on something now, will edit this tool and get back with better solution. Sorry

First of all, this tool wouldn’t be possible without the help of these people – Dan Shure and Dean Cruddace on EvolvingSEO Uberfest of Ubbersuggest post. And like what Dan told me in the email, I’m also confused if it’s Tom Anthony or Tom Critchlow of Distilled.net who authored the Google Query Generator on the spreadsheet; nevertheless, I want to say thank you to them because of their work in improving our scalability in Guest Posting.

Plus, kudos to my SEO buddy, Gary Lacanilao, for the query inspiration!

Guest posting is one of my favorite weapons in my arsenal for link building. For a long time now, it has been proven effective not only by me, but also by the big players in the industry. Nowadays, authority and good links are the talk of town, and again, guest posting comes into the limelight as Google is beginning to refine their algorithms in including author ranks in the formula.

Guest posting should be done precisely in order to be successful with your campaign. And just like what I have mentioned last Sunday on my first gig as a speaker in an SEO Conference – MORCon 2012, one of the important 4 pillars of guest posting is link prospecting. This tool was featured on the SEO Philippines community last Sunday and we worked hard this week in order to take it into another level.

Why Do You Need This? This is a quick tool that can help you identify guest post opportunities through its advance Google query operator relevant to guest posting.

Three things that we love about this tool:

1. Wide Range of Keyword Search – With the help of UbberSuggest, a keyword can be multiplied into a hundred or more. This allows guest post prospecting to reach far beyond normal keyword and link prospecting.

2. Managed Keyword Searches – We often do link prospecting without managing the keywords that we use. Using this tool will keep you focused on the keyword that you are currently using while searching for guest post opportunities.

3. Free Advanced Query in Guest Post Prospecting – We all want the best result in one Google search, right? We use a reliable guest post prospecting query and transcribed it on the tool for free use. Plus, we chipped in some extra operators to speed up your prospecting

Get the tool and test it! Please login to your gmail :

1. Go to the spreadsheet by visiting this link – http://bit.ly/gpprospector
2. Go to ‘File’Tab and choose ‘Make a Copy
3. Follow the super easy instruction found on cell A151

How Does It Work?

Before you use the tool, go to the Google keyword tool or any keyword tool that you use to expand your keyword. Let me pick our favorite “Traveling”. Expand your keyword and download it.

Choose the first keyword and copy it to your clipboard.

Go to the tool and paste your keyword on CELL B2. Wait for the sheet to populate…

Go to column H and choose your search trigger

See the search result: Click here

Finding guest post opportunities can be tedious and time-consuming. It consumes a huge amount of time on discovering high value blogs, and it requires a huge amount of keyword resources in order to widen your search. With SEOteky GP Query Generator, we hope we could help you minimize your efforts in searching for link opportunities, but increasing the quality of your work as you can spend more time contemplating on what to write instead of where to write.

If you find this tool helpful and want to see more updates, please don’t forget to subscribe on our RSS – See the ‘Subscribe’ button on the top left side of the site? Hit it!

I’ll be speaking at the SEO Philippines Mastering Online Rankings Conference (MORCon) 2012 in Saturday, 29th of September 2012; my very first appearance on a big audience as a speaker. Though I’ve been doing inbound marketing talks for college students for quite some time now, I can feel that ‘itch’ to impress the people who expect a lot from me. Before I lose my breath and have a nervous breakdown as I count the days before the MORCon, let me express my gratitude to all the people that influenced my work a lot.

1. Jason Acidre – This might sound gay, but the day that I met Jason Acidre personally and shook his hands like he was Obama or the next President of the Philippines. That changed the way I see SEO and I guess, its forever. His work; his achievements at such a young age definitely inspire me and many SEOs in the industry. My Monday wouldn’t be complete without reading his blog, Kaiserthesage. I recommend that you dig his archives for SEO Strategies.

A superb 1 hour question and answer session backed by one of the best agency in the industry – SEER. So let me give these people a shout out first!

Thanks to Wil Reynolds, Ethan Lyon and Alisa Scharf for answering some of my questions related to bingo and guest posting initiatives.

1. #RCS (REAL COMPANY STUFF) Works

If not make it happen, this is what I always tell to my team. Don’t be just another SEO or link builder who walk past this industry. Strive harder and be more creative, if you think that this #RCS idea of yours would work – then tell me, let’s make it happen. Just like what Wil Reynolds told me In the SEER Interactive Q&A when I asked about link building for bingo related site. He advise to do some #RCS for the client like offer a free bingo game for free, old, gay people and the long list of bingo niche.

He showed me some bingo nights for charities (Google Query)

Sweet – We Made It Happen

I love #RCS, we have done this last week. We made a sponsorship with Adamson U Computer Science Community for their general assembly. We gave away prizes and goodies for college students and what did we get?

A relationship that will last with an educational institution

A chance to return a favor to my alma mater Adamson University

A never ending recognition from the community of the school.

A bragging right that our logo is next to Microsoft and Accenture

A backlink from an edu related domain

Now that is #RCS, we made it happen!

Still confused of #RCS? RAZOR BLADES DON’T TALK. What DOLLAR SHAVE CLUB did was amazing. CONNECT WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS – ENGAGE, ENGAGE, ENGAGE and WIN THEM ALL!

2. What I learned in Guest Posting from SEER Interactive

Of course, this SEER Interactive Q&A wouldn’t be finished without me asking about Guest Posting. I always want to improve our guest posting campaign and this is the perfect opportunity to ask the best people in doing it.

There are blog niches that seem to be more monetized than others – Alisa Scharf of SEER Interactive pointed out mommy bloggers who demand for money that we don’t have to offer.

Knowing your product X and O’s is always important before making any plan.

The Demographic of your product is important. Know who and who else might be interested on your product. This will allow you to widen your outreach and pickup guest post opportunities from other niche.

<Thinking of a title> How Online Bingo Players Could Stay Healthy While Enjoying the Game to be pitched for health related blogs.

Relationship is always important because your friends are less likely to request for compensation than a stranger who walks in and ask for a guest post opportunity. So as influence, if you are someone who has that Brad Pitt with Jesus Abs type of personality in your niche. It’s easier to convince people to allow you contribute to their site.

Tap into greater heights. If you can pitch something useful to teachers, charities and organizations then do it.

3. Content Creation & Marketing

See what people are really looking for and prove the keyword’s worth in order to convince your boss for a real content marketing budget.

Position your content on keywords that has good amount of searches

Setup Google Alerts – Know from what places do your target customer can come from and write content that are specifically tailored for your audience.

We SEO’s should make it happen

SEO’s should stop thinking of ways how they can take advantage and manipulate search engines. Instead spend time on thinking of useful ways to promote the product and services of their client. Improve how your brand engages to your customers, kill that “SELL MODE” mentality and connect with people of same interest. Ask them how you can improve your product and services. Learn how to improve your client relationship. Real Company Stuff works, Let’s make it happen!

—–
